In short

About half of US adults now use AI chatbots, and 42% use them to search for information (Pew Research Center, February 2026). When Google put an AI summary on top, people clicked a regular result on 8% of visits instead of 15% in 2025 (Pew Research Center). An AI answer to a local question names two to four businesses on average (BrightLocal, 2026).

For a small business, that can mean fewer visits from search, a short list it may not be on, and facts about it that it did not write. The parts below show the evidence, where the studies disagree, and what a business can control.

01 / How people ask has changed

Asking AI is now a mainstream habit.

Pew’s panel survey is the strongest measure we found. It puts chatbot use at about half of US adults in February 2026, and most of that use is looking things up.

In early 2025, 34% of US adults had used ChatGPT AR01. A year later, Pew counts 44% for ChatGPT and 49% for any AI chatbot, with 42% using chatbots to search for information AR02R03.

Pew widened the question in 2026 to cover chatbots like ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot, so the two years are not a strict trend. Pew says so itself.

Search is still the larger habit.

In a YouGov survey of US adults in spring 2026, 86% of online searchers had used a search engine in the past 30 days and 25% had used AI tools BR04. The two habits now run side by side. Google is also folding AI into search itself: it reports more than 1 billion monthly users for AI Mode, worldwide CR07.

Local questions are moving too.

In BrightLocal’s 2026 consumer survey of 1,002 US adults, 45% said they use AI tools for local business recommendations, up from 6% the year before CR05. A one-year jump that large needs the question wording to judge, and BrightLocal has not published it.

BrightLocal’s own product page gives a different figure, 58%, from a different sample CR06. Read both as direction. The same page reports that 18% of AI users contact a business AI recommended directly, and three in four of them check it on Google first.

02 / What that does to a small business

Fewer clicks, and a shorter list.

When the answer arrives on the page, fewer people visit a website. When AI writes the answer, it names a handful of businesses and leaves the rest out.

Fewer people click through.

Pew tracked the actual browsing of 900 US adults for a month. On Google visits that showed an AI summary, people clicked a regular result 8% of the time, against 15% on visits without one. A link inside the summary got a click on 1% of visits AR08.

Before AI summaries spread, most Google searches already ended without a click: 58.5% in the US in 2024, with 360 of every 1,000 searches reaching a website outside Google BR09.

Local searches see AI summaries often. A manual check of 540 local business searches in three US cities found an AI Overview on 68% of them CR15.

How much? The studies disagree.

Studies of click-through rate on searches that show an AI Overview agree on the direction through 2025 and disagree on the size BR10R11R12. Each compares a different window and a different set of searches, so no single number holds.

Then two things cut the other way. Seer’s 2026 update shows click-through on these searches rising 85% from a December 2025 low BR13. And Google says total organic clicks to websites are “relatively stable,” without publishing a figure DR14.

A short list, and it moves.

BrightLocal asked AI tools about 200,000 local questions for 1,300 business locations over 60 days. A Google AI Overview named 2.5 businesses per answer on average, AI Mode 3.5 and ChatGPT 4.1; about one answer in ten named none BR16.

Ask the same question again and the list changes: only 20% to 33% of the businesses overlapped between repeat runs. Google Maps named a tracked business in 66% of searches; the AI surfaces did in 32% to 38% BR16.

A smaller test started from the top 20 Google Maps results for 100 trade-and-city searches. ChatGPT named 35.6% of those businesses and Google AI Mode 18.4% CR17. These were already the top-ranked businesses; the report expects lower rates further down.

AI sends few visitors so far.

Traffic that arrives from AI tools is still a sliver of what websites get. Across 101,574 sites, it was 0.32% of all traffic in 2026 BR27. Across 13,770 mostly large-company domains in 2025, just over 1% BR28. In early 2025, Google sent about 345 times more traffic than the three main AI tools combined CR29.

The tools read far more than they send back. In July 2025, OpenAI’s crawlers fetched about 1,100 pages for every visit they referred, and Anthropic’s about 38,000 BR30. The answer gets written from a business’s pages whether or not anyone clicks.

Whether those few visitors buy more is argued. Adobe’s retail data shows AI visitors converting 54% better than other traffic in May 2026, and the reverse a year earlier CR31; BrightEdge calls AI “a research channel, not a conversion channel” CR32. We found no study of this for small businesses.

03 / Why it goes wrong

AI writes the answer from what it can find.

The facts in an answer come from a business’s own site, its listings and what others write about it. When those are missing, unreadable or disagree, the answer fills the gap.

Where AI looks.

In BrightLocal’s local study, 93% of the distinct websites AI cited were business sites BR16. In Yext’s count of 6.8 million AI citations, websites made up 44% and listings 42% BR18. A business’s own pages and listings are the raw material.

How often the facts are wrong.

Insites asked ChatGPT and Perplexity about 10,000 US local businesses and compared each answer with the business’s Google profile. Only 55.6% of ChatGPT answers and 48.1% of Perplexity answers fully matched. A wrong phone number was the most common error CR20. Insites notes that some phone mismatches are likely call-tracking numbers, so the real error rate “may be a little lower than it looks.” The benchmark profile can also be out of date.

A vendor test of UK high-street retailers found at least one false fact about 64% of them; the wrong postcode was the most common CR21.

Gap

No study we read isolates wrong opening hours, or a business wrongly shown as closed. Those errors still need their own measure.

04 / What a business can control

Some of this is yours to fix.

Most of what AI cites for a local question is a business’s own site and its listings R16R18. That part a business controls.

Within your reach

  • Whether AI can reach and read your site. AI tools fetch pages with their own crawlers; a site that blocks them, or shows its text only after scripts run, gives them little to read.
  • The facts on your site. Name, services, hours, phone and service area, stated plainly, the same on every page. Business sites are most of what AI cites for local questions (R16, R18).
  • Your listings. Claimed and matching your site, on the directories AI reads in your market (R18).
  • Reviews, asked for honestly. Every customer asked the same way, never paid or screened.
  • What others write about you. Real mentions in lists, local press and associations track with how often AI names a brand, as a correlation (R26).

Outside anyone’s control

  • Which businesses an answer names. The tool decides, and the short list leaves most businesses out (R16, R17).
  • The answer changing from one ask to the next. Repeat runs share only 20% to 33% of their businesses (R16).
  • What a model already learned. Older facts can persist after a site is fixed.
  • How the tools change. Citation patterns shifted within a year in the studies above (R10 to R13, R33, R34).

What Still Fox does about it.

We check whether AI can reach and read a business’s website, ask AI the questions its customers ask, and record what the answers say and cite. Then we fix the site and give you the list for your listings. On the care plan, which opens in late November, we check again every month.

No one can make AI recommend a business, and we do not promise it. We report what AI says, what it gets wrong, and what changed after a fix. The business owns its domain, its content and its code from the first day.

The first step is a free snapshot: one page, by email, within two business days.

Where the sources disagree.

We show both numbers and say which one we lean on.

  • Google says clicks are stable; outside studies show them falling.

Google gives no figure R14. Pew, Ahrefs and Seer measure clicks per search or per visit in samples R08R10R12. The two do not test the same thing. We lean on Pew, the one independent behavioral measure.

  • 45% or 58% of consumers use AI for local recommendations.

Both are BrightLocal, from different samples and unpublished wording R05R06. We quote the 45% from the survey report.

  • How often ChatGPT recommends a business location.

SOCi’s 2026 index is widely quoted at 1.2% of locations, and another SOCi page gives 6.5%, with no sample or platform split shown. We do not use either figure.

  • Does a good Google rank carry over to AI answers?

Only 12% of pages cited by AI tools ranked in Google’s top 10 for the same question, and 8% for ChatGPT R19. For Google’s AI Overviews, Ahrefs reported 76% from the top 10 in July 2025 and 38% in March 2026, after changing how it matched pages R33R34. Seer found page-one Google rank correlated about 0.65 with how often ChatGPT named a brand R35, and our Method page rates ranking as working. Different measures of one question. Our read: ranking helps but does not decide it.

  • Brand-controlled or earned sources.

Yext says 86% of AI citations come from sources brands control, yet its own buckets sum differently R18. An academic preprint reports a strong tilt toward third-party coverage for general questions. Different questions; we use only Yext’s local website and listing shares.

Method. Sources were found by search and read at their own pages on October 15, 2026, primary pages first, with secondary coverage used only where marked. Every excerpt and figure was then checked against the page’s own text by direct fetch; F3 could not be reached and is marked. Studies named in the conflicts list without an ID are not used for any claim. Still Fox’s own measurements are not used in this report. Corrections: hello@stillfox.ai. Version 1.
