Does my website need an llms.txt file?

No evidence says it helps. Across nearly 300,000 domains, SE Ranking found no correlation between having an llms.txt file and being cited by AI, and Ahrefs found that 97% of llms.txt files received zero traffic in May 2026. Google says you do not need “AI text files” to appear in its AI features.

B Q4 In the research report

The full answer.

What it is. A proposed text file at the root of a site that lists the pages a site owner wants AI to read. It is a proposal, with no search company committed to reading it.

What the studies found. SE Ranking: “no correlation between AI citations and LLMs.txt” (Q3). Ahrefs, across 137,000 sites: “97% of those files received zero traffic in May 2026” (Q4). Google: “You don’t need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features” (Q1).

Should you add one anyway? It costs little. Do not pay anyone for it, and do not count it as work on your AI visibility.

What to do instead. Let the search crawlers in (question 6), put your facts on your site in plain text, and keep your listings matching it (question 5).

What Still Fox does.

We do not sell llms.txt. Our evidence ledger lists it among the tactics we refuse, with the studies behind that call.
